Friday Gadget: Concepts for Future Glass Display Applications

I took a few weeks off from Friday Gadget posts as I was on my spring break with my family.  This week I am back with a post the future of displays.

The post today features a concept video from Corning Glass that is actually a couple of years old.  The video is a montage from its “A Day Made of Glass” series of videos that they created in 2011 and 2012.   Even though the video montage I am sharing below was made a couple of years ago, it is very, very relevant today.  The video provides us with a fantastic view of the potential futures of applications that involve glass displays.    Even if you have seen the videos, its worth another look. 

The video was produced to share Corning’s vision on how glass will help create a more connected, collaborative, and interactive world.  The video features a family of four going about a “normal day,” aided by glass-pane tablets and touchscreen walls. But the latest video reveals an even broader view of the role specialty glass could play in the “near future,” reaching out of the home and into hospitals, schools, even parks.

The video is embedded below and is 5 minutes in length.  I guarantee it is worth the time.  It will really get you thinking about how we might interact with information in the future.  As you watch the video, think about the emerging “3rd” computing platform that is made up of technologies like big data, analytics, data visualization, cloud computing, social business, mobile computing, wearables, internet of things, cognitive computing, and human computer interaction.  The video does a great job of showing how all those technologies, when fully integrated into solutions and services, can make a significant impact in our lives.

Corning is, of course, very much focused on selling the future of glass.  Their stated vision is “Interactive glass surfaces, seamless delivery of real-time information, and technologies that enrich your life”.  The company creates and makes specialty glasses that are critical components within the concept products shown in the videos.   The vivid displays, durable touch surfaces, or instant, real-time communications shown in the videos, each require some form of specialty glass.   Learn more about Corning’s innovations in glass.

The IBM Fellows program was founded in 1962 by Thomas J. Watson, Jr., as a way to promote creativity among the company’s “most exceptional” technical professionals. The following year, the first appointments were made and the tradition has since carried on every year. The Fellow honor acknowledges an IBM Researcher’s important contributions and industry-leading innovations in developing some of the world’s most important technologies.

Recently, IBM announced a record number of eleven scientists to the 2014 class of IBM Fellows.  The 2014 IBM Fellows have influenced a broad array of technologies in the following areas: Brain-inspired cognitive computing, security platforms, computational science, cloud computing, business database and analytics, and high performance, enterprise storage technologies. IBM Fellows have a history of pushing the boundaries of science and technology to deliver improved solutions for constantly changing, global business needs.

The 2014 IBM Fellows represent a microcosm of IBM’s diverse global research and technical community. Their backgrounds vary—from a village in southern India to the holy city of Jerusalem to a small town in central Kentucky.   However, from different starting points, today these 11 leaders in their respective fields have reached the same destination…they are now IBM Fellows.

The emergence of a new computing era built on a secure platform of mobile, social, cloud, and big data/analytics capabilities is impacting business models and processes.  Keeping pace with new trends such as mobile, big data analytics, and the growing move towards cloud-based systems has brought new and more challenging issues to the forefront of application development.   Application software developers must transform old legacy applications to align with fast changing business needs. In today’s environment, application development teams need increased agility, new skill sets, distributed teams, and more complex software engineering methods.

Here then, is my list of top software development trends for 2014

  1. Innovate for the “Third Platform”:  Legacy is old. Developing on the third platform will accelerate in 2014. However, it requires new skills in Security, Social, Cloud, Mobile, Big Data/Analytics, IoT, HCI, Gamification, and Cognitive Computing.
  2. Use of APIs Accelerates: In 2014, we are going to see a huge leap forward in how APIs are put to use to drive innovation and help organizations be more efficient and profitable.
  3. Designing For Hybrids: Developers must design private cloud services with a hybrid future in mind . Must make sure future integration and interoperability are possible, while securing the enterprise at the same time.
  4. IoT & Embedded Systems: Demand for skilled developers who can develop sense and respond systems and other IoT-based solutions increases.

Friday Gadget: Rapport Device Detects and Reacts to Human Emotions

I’ve decided to bring back the Friday Gadget posts after a very long absence. 

I am not really a gadget guy, but I do like to think about what types of products future generations will have that will make their life easier and think about how emerging technologies will be a part of our lives in the future. When I first started blogging back in 2006, every Friday I would post about a concept for a future technology or gadget.   The series of posts were designed to help us all take a step back on a Friday, have a little fun, and help us all imagine how technology can disrupt the future. 

So I am bringing back the Friday Gadget posts.  I am not sure how long the series will last this time, but we will have fun with it while it lasts…

For this first new post , I found a project team that asked the question:  What if your gadgets knew how you were feeling and could then respond appropriately?   A group of designers developed a device they call Rapport that can observe, analyze and react to your facial expressions in order to select a music playlist that suits you the best.  Once you make eye contact with the device, it leans forward and analyzes your facial expression. Taking into account the time of day, it selects a song that it feels might suit your current mood.   The Rapport device starts the playback of the song at a fairly low volume, but will boost the volume if it sees you smiling or excited.

Under the covers, the team utilized 4 different software programs including Visual Studio (stores the facial recognition library and eye tracking code), Processing (runs the facial recognition library), Max/Msp(controls volume and curates music) and Arduino (drives the stepper motors inside the device).

Potential initial applications could include smart homes, retirement homes, entertainment events, and education.  In the future, application developers will utilize emotion detection systems to design robots that understand how better to interact with humans.   Over time robots could learn to understand how different humans react emotionally and treat each person differently based on both visual and auditory inputs.

SteadyServ’s iKeg™ Solution: Leveraging The Third Computing Platform

At the heart of their new solution is a sensor that easily attaches to the bottom of a beer keg.  That sensor can tell a beer distributor or a tavern owner, in real time, exactly how many kegs are in the cooler and how much beer is left in each keg. 

The iKeg™ system actually consists of three parts – the hardware, software and a mobile app.  The hardware combines the aforementioned removable sensor ring and a RFID tag.  Once the RFID tag is scanned, the cloud-based software receives the data from the sensor, tracking how much beer remains, type of beer, age and when it was delivered.  Analytics in the iKeg™ solution measures and reports the real-time inventory of draft kegs, which is all accessible via a mobile app. 

The iKeg™ mobile app allows you to send customizable automatic social alerts to Facebook and Twitter every time a new beer goes on tap. It also provides a number of fully-integrated tools to help promote your establishment, special event or a unique beer that you might want to highlight. The iKeg™ solution also automates the order and fulfillment process for the entire inventory of draft, bottled and canned beers.   All this information is then tallied with the stock, the next delivery date, previous order information, event information, and past and future beer consumption trends.  In addition, the iKeg™ solution uses advanced machine-to-machine communication technologies to ensure that the system is secure, reliable and highly scalable.  

It seems to me SteadyServ has a bright future ahead.  It’s a perfect example of an innovative solution provider leveraging the IoT (Internet of Things), Mobile, Cloud, Social, and Data Analytics trends.   I see the a whole new era of similar cloud-based solutions that will be developed and implemented as part of this new computing platform.

Big Data and Analytics are such powerful trends in the media that Data Visualization often gets overlooked…or is an afterthought.  It should not be that way.  You can do a great job of implementing Big Data and Analytics solutions but if you can’t display the insights to decision makers in a format that helps them quickly understand the insights and the implications of those insights, then you are not helping them make business decisions.

Wikipedia defines Data Visualization as “the study of the visual representation of data, meaning “information that has been abstracted in some schematic form, including attributes or variables for the units of information.” Wikipedia (link)

I believe in 2013 we will see (we need to see) increased attention placed on the importance of Data Visualization as a separate important trend topic. The explosive growth in Big Data…both structured and unstructured is resulting in large databases and data warehouses that contain critical information that can aid in the process of making decisions. Advanced analytics software is getting better at pulling the insights out of that information, however Business Leaders need the insights presented in simple visual formats that aid and speed decision making. That’s where data visualization solutions can help.

Data Visualization Trends for 2013

  1. Awareness: In 2013, there will be increased awareness of the benefits of data visualization, leading to more requests for information, demos, and case studies.
  2. Growth: Focused vendors like Tableau and Spotfire continue to innovate and grow at a rapid pace as decision makers demand improved data visualization capability.
  3. Large Vendors: Larger IT vendors will increase investments in this market to complement Big Data and Analytic capabilities.
  4. Self Service: The self service trend extends to visualization tools as users want to be able to manipulate the data, simulating expected changes in data in real-time to see impact
  5. Mobile: There will be increased demand for data visualization capabilities on tablets and smartphones.

There’s so much going on in the field of business analytics.  Here are a few of the important trends to watch in 2013
