12 Trends to Watch in Enterprise Security for 2014

Security is a long term trend that just continues to grow in importance as the number of potential entrances that can be exploited grows.  Today’s CIOs have security on their mind 24×7.

As new technologies like cloud, mobile and social take the IT landscape by storm, security risks grow exponentially.  The data center is more vulnerable than ever.  New threats are  emerging daily and even hourly.  For this reason, it is no longer enough for organizations, or even entire governments, to try to address security strictly within their own enterprises, they must understand and protect all the the potential external risks.

In my  report “Enterprise IT Security Trends To Watch In 2014” available on Slideshare, I provide the following list of twelve trends I am watching this year around the Enterprise Security Trend.

  1. “Target”ed Attacks: Expect more targeted and coordinated attacks (like we saw at Target) that are successful in disrupting service and fraudulently obtaining significant amounts of intellectual property.
  2. CISO Role:  As a result of attacks, more enterprises will institute the Chief Information Security Officer role and task them with developing a corporate wide security strategy.
  3. More Complexity: IT Security continues to become very complex, thanks to the ‘third platform” of mobile, social, big data, and cloud. Enterprises must guard against both theft of data, fraud, etc. and hacking into systems and infrastructures.. Security skills will be in high demand.
  4. Encryption:  Expect a huge interest in encryption technologies as enterprises realize that unencrypted data traffic behind the firewall is vulnerable to detection from outsiders.
  5. Biometrics:  The acceptance of biometrics has been very gradual. In 2014, we will see increased adoption of biometrics as a way to transition from the traditional user ID/password combination used most frequently to verify online identities.
  6. Internet of Things:  Need to secure enterprise systems against unwelcome access by Sensors, M2M Devices, Wearables and Embedded Systems.
  7. Security Automation:  Enterprises will invest in better security management facilities, the use of analytics and intelligence to identify trends and usage patterns, and the ability to monitor, report, and act on security intelligence.
  8. Smarter Malware:  Malicious code authors are very adept at camouflaging their work. They will get smarter in 2014. Expect mobile to be a target.
  9. Mobile Threats:  Mobile usage overtakes PCs. Mobile security platform weaknesses are giving rise to new threats. In 2014 hackers/criminals will increasingly target Mobile email, apps, platforms, wallets, and app stores.
  10. BYOWearables:  Employees will be bringing their Smart Glasses, Watches, and Health Monitors to work with them, causing more complexity for I.T. Security professionals.
  11. Device & Location Important:  Enterprises begin analyzing both device and location information to help them understand the potential context of the user’s attempt to access the network.
  12. BYOS:  Expect a rise in “bring your own security” scenarios, in which employees using their own mobile devices for work also employ their own personal security measures – often without the consent or awareness of enterprise security managers.

The World’s Most Influential CMO’s: How Social Are They?

I’ve been doing a bunch of research into online Influencer identification, marketing, and engagement the past 6 months.  It’s a topic that is getting more traction and I expect in 2014 we will see a lot more interest in Influencer research, marketing and engagement strategies. 

For my part,  I’m planning on providing lists of online influencers for each of the 2014 Trend Reports that I am planning on publishing in mid January.   One of those reports will be on trends in Marketing, so a recent Forbes article about Influential CMOs caught my eye.

On October 3, 2013 Forbes and Appinions published a list of “The Most Influential CMOs” along with study results. You can access the article and a pdf file of the study report via the URL http://www.forbes.com/sites/jenniferrooney/2013/10/03/the-worlds-most-influential-cmos

It’s a  very interesting read.  CMOs from the Forbes 500 were identified and ranked based on the number of mentions of their name in the media over a 60 day period from July 27 – Sept. 24, 2013.  Research was conducted to determine the CMOs who were mentioned the most online.  66 CMOs were rank listed as being the “World’s Most Influential CMOs”.  It was found that the most mentioned CMOs were typically most associated with topics that were important to their business or industry.   The pdf file also offers some other interesting research on influencers within companies.

After reading the article and downloading the report, I became curious as to whether the 66 CMO’s that were identified were actually participating on social media platforms.  Longtime readers of this blog might remember I did a similar analysis on CIOs a few years ago (see “2009 CIO Award Winners Are Not Embracing Social Media”).

Worlds Most Influential CMOsSo I launched into an inventory and analysis of the 66 CMOs in the Forbes / Appinions research report.  I wanted to find out if these 66 CMOs had LinkedIn and Twitter accounts and whether or not they were active on those platforms and had established a large social network.   I was also interested to see if any of the 66 CMOs were sharing their own thought leadership on a blogging platform.   My research was conducted December 7-10, 2013. 

In summary, I found that only a fraction of the 66 CMOs on the Forbes “World’s Most Influential CMOs” have presence on social platforms.

  • While almost half of the 66 are actively building their network on LinkedIn, 24 (34%) have less than 3 connections on LinkedIn.
  • Only 14 (21%) are both active on Twitter and have over 1,000 followers
  • Only 12 (18%) have a blog and only 4 (6%) have posted in the past two months

Clearly, the leading CMOs around the world may be getting quoted in media, but they are generally not actively participating on social platforms.  I’d like to see them all contribute more of their thought leadership via blogs on their company websites or via personal blogs.  They can also share their thoughts via Twitter and on LinkedIn.   We can all learn so much from them.

WOMMA’s 2013 Influencer Guidebook

WOMMA (The Word of Mouth Marketing Association) has recently announced the publication of it’s 2013 Influencer Guidebook.  This Guidebook is an educational resource for marketers to better understand the mechanics and metrics of influencer marketing.

I’m excited about this new Guidebook because, I was part of a WOMMA committee that researched, developed, and wrote it over the past year.  My fellow Research & Measurement Council members on this project were Neil Beam (Neil was our committee leader.  He’s from MotiveQuest), Ashley Libby (The Anca Group), Susan Emerick (IBM), Jane Collins (BlogHer), Michael Fein (Fanscape), Amy Laine (IBM) and Dhara Naik (Social@Ogilvy).

With the rise in social media over the past five years, Influencer Marketing programs have become an important part of any social media marketing strategy.   All types of organizations are looking for influencers who have the potential to change the purchasing behavior of the people who follow them.

The WOMMA 2013 Influencer Guidebook helps those that are developing Influencer programs in a number of ways:

    1. Definitions. Four critical elements have been defined and discussed: Influence, Key Influencers, Influencees, and Influencer Marketing and their relationship to each other
    2. Types of Influencers: The identification and description of five distinct categories of influences: Advocate, Ambassador, Citizen, Celebrity, and Professional/Occupational
    3. Program Considerations: A discussion of three levels of program considerations a marketer should consider when constructing their influencer marketing program
    4. Influencer Attributes:  Picking the right influencers is important.  A discussion and list of attributes that an influencer can possess is discussed.
    5. Metrics:  The Guidebook clarifies the difference between “potential to influence” metrics from that of “actual/observed influence” metrics – there is a difference and different methodologies are required

Gamification: A 2013 HorizonWatching Trend Report

My Gamification: A 2013 HorizonWatching Trend Report has been pretty popular out on Slideshare so I thought I’d post about it here.

Gamification can be defined as the emerging trend of applying game-design techniques to non-game situations and applications.  The recent hype around Gamification is how enterprises are beginning to employ gaming techniques to business processes.  The main objective with gamification is influence employee or customer behavior in order to motivate them, in a fun and entertaining way, to solve a problem or execute a business process.  There are many potential applications of Gamification across all business processes.  Gartner has said that they believe 70% of the Fortune 2000 corporations will have implemented a Gamification application by 2014.

Social Business: A 2013 HorizonWatching Trend Report

I’ve posted my Social Business:  A 2013 HorizonWatch Trend Report out to Slideshare and have embedded the report at the bottom of this post.  The report provides an overview of the Social Business trend and what we might expect to see happen in 2013.  The report contains summary information as well as many links to websites, reports, videos, and other resources to help you learn more about Social Business.

Social Business is really not about the technology, it’s about connecting people.   It is clear that social collaboration is changing the way business is being conducted.  Over the next 10-15 years, social computing capability will become part of every business function within the company.  Social capabilities will become embedded in every single website, computing device for every participant in every single business transaction.  All participants involved in a company’s business processes and transactions will have the ability to share content, comment on content, rate/vote on content, and collaborate in an open and sharing environment.

  1. It’s more than Social CRM: Social Business capability is increasingly embedded into all traditional applications.
  2. CEO (and Senior Execs): Finally realize it’s not a fad, but a new way of doing business. They step up to owning the transformation challenge.
  3. CIOs take more of an interest: Driven by CEO/LOB interest as well as IT concerns (security, integration, control, user experience, etc.).
  4. Processes start to change: It’s not about the technology, its about how we work.
  5. Analytics: New dashboard analytics and visualzations provide progress reports to execs on how the transformation is going
  6. Social Media Marketing: Enterprise Marketeers need to pull in the reins, clean house, and re-focus on relationship engagement.
  7. Renewed Focus on Owned Properties: Data ownership, security and control are a concern.
  8. Community Marketing: .com Communities spring up around every topic, every function, every business process. Many are mismanaged and will fail within 90 days after launch.
  9. Education & Training: Companies deploy tailored education to employees, segmenting them based on their needs and experience levels.
  10. Reward Programs: Gamification applied to social business results in socially active customers, employees and partners being more motivated, rewarded, and recognized.

marketing - Enterprise MM If you have been following my blog posts here the past month, you know I have been sharing my 2013 trends research notes and observations along the way.  One part of my process is to read what others are saying about trends.   The past two weeks (check out the last 10 blog posts here) I’ve been sharing with you lists of blog posts and online articles that provide discussions relating to the trends I am researching.

Today I am featuring blog posts and articles that discuss important trends in digital marketing and the role of the CMO.  The marketing profession is undergoing a transformation thanks to the ever changing landscape of digital technology.  Marketing professionals have to stay current on how developments in the area of cloud, mobile, social, video, big data and analytics will impact the marketing profession.  2013 promises to be another interesting year as the technology trends just mentioned are all very hot.  It’s not a stretch to say that CMOs and Marketing Departments are a little over their head.

31 Trend and Prediction Lists for Social Business in 2013

Social Business If you’ve been following this blog the last week, you know I am in the process of sharing back to you lists of trends and predictions I have uncovered while doing research on the top Technology trends for 2013.  I’ve inventoried over 500 different articles that discuss trends and predictions that might happen in 2013 related Technology.

I believe that the social business trend will have a profound impact on the architecture and design of future businesses.  Business processes will change and that will lead to required changes in application software.  Those businesses that make the successful transition will be more agile, more responsive, and more successful than others.

Questions Community Managers Have…And Potential Actions They Would Take If They Had Answers

Online Community Managers typically wrestle with the problem of how to encourage more participation in online community platforms.   The secret is to figure out what the community members value and deliver more of that good stuff to them.

As a long time Community Manager, I have always been a proponent of more dashboard tools designed to help the Community Manager solve this problem.   Sophisticated analytical tools can help managers understand their membership demographics and behavior as well as help managers do a better job of delivering content and activities that the community members will respond to. 

Community Managers who focus on delivering content and activities that members value will see increased participation on the community platform.

Below I provide a list of questions a typical Community Manager might have about the community they lead along with a description of the types of actions the Community Manager might take if they had the answers to those questions.

Question 1) What are the other communities that my members belong to?

Potential Actions: 

  • Partner up with other community leaders on community activities (e.g. conference calls, brainstorming exercises, etc.)
  • If there’s a great number of members in one community, it might make sense to merge communities.

Question 2)  Who from my community is also a member of the xyz community?

Potential Actions:

  • Partner up with other community leaders on community activities (e.g. conference calls, brainstorming exercises, etc.)

Question 3) Who has not signed into the community in the last 6 months? Last 12 months?

Potential Actions:

  • Send them a personal email inviting them back into the community space and asking them what could be done to make the community more valuable to them.
  • Post a message on their Profile board.
  • For very inactive users, let them know how to leave the community.

Question 4)  Who has never posted anything to the community?

Potential Actions:

  • See actions for question 3. 

Question 5) Who has posted something to the community more than 5 times?

Potential Actions:

  • These are active community members. I’d like to contact these people and get their feedback, suggestions, etc. on what they want out of the community in the future.
  • I may want to invite a few of these people to help me manage the community.

Question 6)  Who were the top ten most active community members in 2011? so far in 2012?

Potential Actions:

  • I’d like to send these people a Thank you card. 
  • Invite them to a special conference call where I can get feedback and suggestion from them on community activities planned for the future.

Question 7)  As a community manager, it would be helpful to know the percentage of people who have posted more than 10 times, between 5-9 times, between 1-4 times, once, and never. And it would be interesting to compare my community’s stats against all communities

Potential Actions:

  • Benchmarking my community against others can help me understand how I am doing as a community manager in the area of getting my community members to engage and participate. I might want to contact other community managers who have higher rates of engagement / posting than I do to get some ideas on how to improve participation rates.

Question 8)  Who from Asia/Pacific (or any specific region or country) is the most active in my community over the last 6 months?

Potential Actions:

  • I might want to reach out to a specific geographic region and tailor specific community activities to that region. If I know who in the community is most active, I can contact them and ask them for advice or help in planning out the activities.

Question 9)  Who from _______  (insert organization or department name) has participated in a discussion forum the past year?

Potential Actions:

  • I might want to tailor community conference calls or other community activities to a specific organization or department.  
  • I know who from that organization is most active, I can reach out to them and ask them for advice on how to tailor activities and content.

Question 10)  What types of job roles do my community members have?   Consultants? Sales Reps? Technical Sales? Managers? Lawyers? Marketing Professionals? etc.

Potential Actions:

  • I might want to tailor community conference calls or other community activities to a specific job role. If I know what members is in a specific job role, I can contact them and ask them for advice

Question 11)  How does my community compare to other active communities?

  • Number of Bookmarks?
  • Number of Blog Posts
  • Number of Comments on Blog Posts?
  • Number of Recommended Blog Posts
  • Number of Discussion Forums
  • Number of Replies to Discussion Forums
  • Number of Hits

Potential Actions:

As a community manager, I’d like to benchmark my community against other active communities.  Where does  my community rank?  I’d like to see the above stats computed as a percentage of total members and I’d like to see a graph of the above stats viewed as a 30,60,90, 120 day trend line.

  • Knowing this information helps me understand how well I am doing to engage my community members.  And it will help me understand where I can improve.
  • This exercise would also identify the top performing communities…and allow us all to learn from those community managers that are doing a great job.

The Mobile Computing gold rush is in full swing. The “train has left the station”. It's hard to talk to an enterprise customer these days without getting into a discussion about Mobile.

In 2012, the shipment of smartphones and tablets is expected to exceed that of traditional personal computers, including laptops. Enterprise CIOs want to use these personal mobile devices to give better access to their internal data and processes for executives and employees, as well as enabling better purchasing and support services for their customers.

Complicating the CIO’s life are a number of factors:

  • employees who wish to use their own devices and applications at work,
  • executives and board of directors who want to use their own devices and applications at work
  • the wide variety of devices used,
  • legacy applications written for a standard desktop screen,
  • application level and device management,
  • cost controls, and
  • maintaining security across the infrastructure.

Some key technology subtrends to watch in 2012 include Voice search and voice assistants, Location Based Services, Gaming, Event-Based Marketing, and Augmented Reality.  On the horizon are applications like Mobile Video and 3D Mobile Internet.   All this has implications for business processes throughout the organization.   CIOs and IT leaders will want to understand how mobile fits into their organization’s unified communications strategy.
